I was fired from a RV sales job for lying about drinking at lunch with clients and co-workers.?

One year later the companies general manager has personally stopped over to my home to offer me my position back. I was top salesman consistantly for the 4 years I worked there. The GM informed me that sales currently are slumping and the concenses is that I could stimulate sales and other salesman. Extremely flattering, but selling RV's in MI now is a concern. And I am currently selling less presigous home improvement products making a simular wage but travel expenses are high. I am asking for advice on what to do. Take the RV job with the strong option for Sales Manager and risk of low sales. Or stay put with current position where sales arealso rocky but picking up.

  1. What do you enjoy more? Did you have more fun selling RVs or your current job? I think the most important part of any job is whether or not you actually enjoy being there. There is no point wasting your life at some place you don't like being at! (being fired for drinking at lunch is stupid as long as you weren't drunk when you came back to work! My bf's boss lets him drink while on the job if they are at the warehouse, and will let him have a beer at lunch too. Gotta love flooring installation!)
  2. I think you're right to look at the future prospects of each position. However, if you're good at what you do, you should be able to always make a living. Here's the problem I have. Did you get fired for drinking, or fired for lying? If for drinking, then make sure that that is not going to be an issue this time. Clarify with them what procedures are acceptable when it comes to client entertainment. If you were fired for lying, I wouldn't go back. There's always going to be that cloud over you. Anyone who knows the situation is going to wonder whether you're being truthful. Sometimes, a clean start at a lesser position is worth it. Good luck!
  3. Son, This ol' country boy read your question, went to the patio, smoked a cigerette, and thought of my choice, about 40 years ago. Seems to me that the home improvement business and the R V business should pretty well run hand in hand with the local economy, the home improvment sales laging somewhat behind the R V sales. IF the past is no longer a factor in your employment, take the R V job, PROVIDED THAT YOU AND ALL--ALL OF THE BOSS'S ARE ON THE SAME PAGE, IN THE SONG BOOK !!! It may sound corny to you, but I suggest that you ( and all others, apply the following to your life) Life is too short to : Wear badly fitting boots, Drink cheap whiskey, Dance with a mean woman, and not pass on knowledge gleaned / learned from your own mistakes!!! Best of luck, Uncle Wil
  4. Trying to project the success of either home improvement or RV business trends is, at best, a speculation. ALL products go through what is known as the "business cycle" where there are mountain tops and valleys. My suggestion is to consider which job you will like best, and what you really have enthusiasm about. Liking a job will enable you to weather the storms of life and business cycles. For example, if you like traveling and camping, your natural enjoyment of such activities will manifest in the RV position, and you are more likely to be successful and find things more enjoyable. However, if you do like home improvement, building, improving and interior decoration, etc, then staying with the present position may be better. I would not consider the past to be any indication of the future, unless, as a previous poster mentioned, you were let go for lying ( the trust factor has been reduced in this case ). What ever you decide, good luck!
